An Orbital implant is required when a person loses an eye due to disease or trauma. The orbital implant occupies the space usually filled by the eyeball and gives substantial cosmetic benefits to the patient.

Addition Technology, Inc. has recently acquired the assets relating to a soft biointegratable orbital implant. The AlphaSphere™ does not require covering with donor sclera (from the white of the eye) or expensive synthetic mesh prior to implantation, as do most existing technologies.

The AlphaSphere orbital implant is manufactured from the same soft hydrophilic polymer as AlphaCor. The unique properties of the PHEMA gel and sponge components allow the muscles to be sutured directly in place, and allow tissue integration to occur. The device heals into place under the patient’s conjunctiva. A cosmetic shell can then be placed between the eyelids to restore the normal appearance.

AlphaSphere has entered Addition Technology's product development program for introduction in 2007.
